Moorpark College hosted a Student Senate for California Community Colleges Region VI Regular Meeting where delegates discussed remodeling the SSCCC Constitution on Oct. 9.
The colleges in Region VI include Allan Hancock, Antelope Valley, College of the Canyons, Cuesta, Moorpark, Oxnard, Santa Barbara City, Taft and Ventura.
The meeting, hosted monthly at different colleges and for the first time this year at Moorpark, is where delegates from each college come together to discuss issues affecting Region VI.
In addition to status reports about activities student governments of the colleges have been conducting, an issue they focused on was the SSCCC constitution, a document that governs the SSCCC.
Resolution 18.02, passed in fall 2013 by the SSCCC, called for interested parties to submit models of the Constitution to be reviewed and voted upon.
The resolution was passed because of the SSCCC’s recent incorporation as a non-profit organization and change in strategic planning, according to a document titled Constitutional Convention Frequently Asked Questions, that was presented at the meeting.
The change is also part of an effort to “modernize” the Constitution, the document stated.
However, no new constitution models had been submitted by Region VI’s deadline, which was Oct. 5.
Models that have been submitted by other regions will be discussed at the Fall 2015 General Assembly, where representatives from all regions will gather from Nov. 13 to 15, according to the SSCCC website.
Pam Walker, the vice chancellor of academic affairs and student services of California Community Colleges, made a brief appearance at the meeting and expressed the state’s support for student government and delegates.
“They help the students who don’t yet believe they have a voice,” Walker said. “Remember, if there’s any problem, just call Sacramento.”
Delegates from Ventura, Oxnard, College of the Canyons and Cuesta College were not present.

This is great! Glad to see MC being a part of the larger picture. I’d like to learn more about the SSCCC…
When will Moorpark be having another meeting?
