Through many injured and only 6 players on the team, our Lady Raiders’ basketball team have managed a 10-11 and 3-4 overall season and conference record.
At Moorpark College, coaches train athletes to make a legacy not only for the college, but also for the athletes. With the strength of six women, they were outnumbered and out-sized, but shall never be out-willed.
First year as head coach, Kenny Plumer, is excited to finish the season strong.
“We only played with six girls most of the year and we have done a phenomenal job this far,” said Plumer. “The girls work together, they work hard and they stick together.”
With met expectations and faith in his team, Plumer sees the best in his players and knows they will overcome their challenges this season with more wins.
“The team’s hard work and dedication is so strong that I hope the returning players can share it with the new players,” said Plumer.
A team that plays hard sometimes suffers from injuries. Although the team has had this reoccurring theme throughout the season, they still continue to fight.
Havanna Yannello, a freshman on women’s basketball team, is prepared to give her all as she encounters the end of a great team.
“We’re working more as a team,” said Yannello. “We’re depending more on each other.”
Although communication got the best of the team at the start of the season, they continue to strive to make a stronger connection.
Above all, the team has become more connected, making them stronger and fierce. Their hustle on the defensive end has set them apart from other teams setting them third in the conference.
A player striving to set her self apart from her colleagues and opposing team, Team captain Sydney Perry, a sophomore for the Lady Raiders, is doing her best to finish her final season at Moorpark College.
“I’ve been injured pretty much the whole season and as a captain, that’s been hard to deal with,” said Perry. “Overall as a team, we came together and played hard.”
A women’s basketball team includes a lot of skill and fundamentals, but with the right mind-set and dedication that these women bring they see past the fear that runs towards them.
The Lady Raiders have really put their hardest efforts into this season and we hope to see them in the play-offs.
