Cuban Salsa dance was one of the many workshops taught at Moorpark College’s 26 Annual Multicultural Day.
The Cuban Salsa Dance was held at the dance studio in the PAC from 11:45 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Students learned about the history of Cuban Salsa, how it differs from other types of salsa dances, and were taught some dance moves so they could walk out of there as dancers.
The dance was instructed by Johnathan Kraut, who works with Rueda In the Park in Santa Clarita, teaching Cuban Salsa dance to those who want to learn. This was their fifth year participating in Multicultural Day and are happy to help out every year.
“Seeing the faces light up when they start to dance themselves, that’s the most exciting thing,” said Kraut.
Kraut brought five leaders with him to help with the lessons and to help out students. They started off the class with a brief history of Cuban Salsa and put on a small dance performance so the students could get a look of what they were about to learn.
Kraut then encouraged students who had never danced and were scared to participate to learn a couple of dance moves.
Students seemed to be having a lot of fun and were very active in the class.
Jacob Dorman, 18, business major, stepped into the room because he thought the workshop sounded interesting.
“It was a different experience for me because I’ve never dance before,” said Dorman.
Kraut felt the turnout was great and the room was filled with a positive atmosphere.
“Everyone is smiling and happy and that’s how we know we are doing what we should do,” said Kraut.
At the end of the workshop students wanted to try it again, but they ran out of time, so Kraut and his leaders had an impromptu dance that most of students stayed for to show off what they learned.
