Moorpark College’s Head Football Coach Michael Stuart will be starting his second season this fall as the head coach for the Raiders, but this will be his first year as a full-time faculty member.
Stuart had been moonlighting between working at the college and for AIG in Woodland Hills. He will work there until he officially becomes a full-time member in August. Since he first started coaching at Moorpark as the assistant coach, Stuart had been working two full-time jobs for the last six years.
“We have the exact same staff,” said Stuart. “We were sort of blessed in a way that we got everyone that wanted to come back.”
As of now, Stuart is only on the fall 2016 schedule for football and hopes to have a lot more classes to teach than football. Ultimately he would like to put his master’s degree in Kinesiology to use and teach some classes.
“I want to get out and be with a normal student,” said Stuart. “…Kinesiology, health society, health education…whatever they give me, I’m gonna take.”
Interim Athletic Director Vance Manakas knew all along that he wanted to hire Stuart as a full-time member of the college.
“It was our goal to hire the best candidate for our position of head football coach,” said Manakas. “Mike [Stuart] was that individual.”
Stuart doesn’t just teaches young adults life lessons in his football program, but also likes to teach life lessons to any of the students in his regular classes.
“I think I teach all my football players and normal students the same type of deal,” said Stuart. “I want those kids who come into my class to feel like they accomplished something for that day…I’m just looking forward to meeting more students, not just student athletes per say.”
Stuart will wait to find out what additional classes he will teach in the fall, but as for now, he focuses his attentions to the football team as they are in the middle of spring practices.
