The very talented Moorpark College Wind Ensemble puts on “Music For A Sunday Afternoon” in the performing arts building on May 15 at 2 p.m.
This event consists of a wonderful afternoon of music that ranges from the classics to popular Broadway music to modern masterpieces, according to Brendan McMullin, director of the Moorpark College Wind Ensemble.
They will be including the modern epic “Symphony No. 1 ‘The Lord of the Rings'” by Johann De Meij. This feature premiered in 1988 and 1989 and was awarded first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago and has become the staple of wind ensembles in literature, according to McMullin.
Some other features that the event will contain is music composed by Manuel De Falla, Joseph Willcox Jenkins, and Leonard Bernstein.
McMullin said he and the students are excited to feature their new world-renowned faculty member, Luis Zuñiga, on Saxophone at the concert.
This Wind Ensemble is not just made up of music majors from Moorpark College. According to McMullin, there will be a few ambitious high school students in the ensemble as well.
“Our focus is on our music majors,” said McMullin. “However, we have numerous Moorpark College students who are majoring in something else participating.”
This event is very beneficial to students because it gives them the inside look on how the Wind Ensemble performs, for they are also at their highest artistic levels.
Rehearsals are every Tuesday night from 6 to 9 p.m.
