The Moorpark College jazz ensembles filled the room with beautiful, soulful sounds that echoed off the walls of the Performing Arts Center.
Three different bands took turns wowing the audience with their professional performances and the audience members took notice, as they all tapped along to the smooth jazz sounds that filled the room during “All About Jazz” on Saturday.
As performers were featured in different songs, family members and loved ones were quick to show their love with several standing ovations.
The bands also took on some of local jazz hero Brian Swartz’s original pieces while Swartz played along with the bands.
Santa Susana High School student Kai Chorazewicz, 16, has been performing with the jazz band for six semesters at Moorpark College.
“I first heard about the program through my private instructor who put me in contact with Brendan McMullin (music department faculty),” said Chorazewicz. “That was when I was in the eighth grade. I have been here ever since.”
Ulises Ernesto Guzman-Garcia, 19-year-old music major, says his love for music is what brought him to the Moorpark Jazz Ensemble.
“[The music department] is fantastic—all the music instructors, the people, are all amazing,” said Garcia.
Although Garcia admits to being tired since he is in all the bands, he truly loves music and it is that passion which kept him going through a long day filled with jazz.
“We had jazz day right before this,” said Garcia. “I can’t feel my face, but I think for me personally, we did really well.”
