Moorpark College students are invited to celebrate Constitution Day with a voter registration booth, free ice cream and constitutional speakers.

Members of the Constitutional Convention first signed the United States Constitution, beginning the process of its ratification on Sept. 17, 1787. In order to celebrate that milestone, Moorpark College will be holding the Constitution Day event on Thursday, Sept. 15.

“There is such a value in recognizing the significance of the U.S. constitution,” said Moorpark College President Luis Sanchez. “It’s the only document that essentially binds us as Americans. The rest of the country is divided on partisan politics, but that document we all pledged our allegiance to. So it is the cornerstone of our democratic society.”

Constitution Day is an event that all public institutions receiving federal funding are required to observe with some kind of educational programming about the constitution.

The event will host representatives from numerous political parties, supporters of ballot measures, a voter registration table and free ice cream provided by Mister Softee. There will also be a free speech open-mic setup to give students the opportunity to talk openly about issues that are of concern to them.

Giving students an opportunity to be more involved in the larger community and increase their political literacy are the goals of the event, according to event organizer and Student Voice adviser Joanna Miller.

The event, which is being organized by Miller along with the Student Voice editor-in-chief Casey Ahern and managing editor Leslie Kivett, will be held in the Moorpark College campus quad from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
