The Moorpark College Orchestra and Choir departments hope to inspire holiday spirit and leave the audience in awe with their one night only performance “Holiday Lights” this December.
A collaboration of both the Orchestra and Choir from Moorpark College, the show will feature classical holiday music and bring the famous compositions of Antonio Vilvadi to life in showcasing both department’s skills.
James Song, chair of the music department and conductor of the orchestra, explains how his students feel about performing in this event.
“I think that this is the concert that most students in the orchestra are looking forward to,” said Song.”This performance is not so stuffy, the orchestra will still be wearing their suits but will also have Santa hats on.”
Nathanial Deadwylier, a 19-year-old music major and member of choir the explains what it has been like to work on a duel piece with the orchestra.
“At first we were a little bit confused placement wise,” said Brydewater. “But once we practiced the song [Gloria] a little more, then we started to get it.”
Justin Hong, 19, Spanish major, who performed both in the choir’s previous production “To Be Sung on the Water” and will be performing in “Holiday Lights” says that this production will be enjoyable to anyone who attends, regardless of musical taste
“The songs really do sound beautiful,” said Hong. “Even if you aren’t into classical music. The songs, in combination with the orchestra really work well together.”
Hong, recognizes how different preparing for a college level production is compared to a high-school one, attributing much of the difference to conductor Brandon Elliott.
“In high school you just get your sheet of songs and memorize the lyrics of the song,” said Hong. “Here what he [Elliot] does is he’ll give us a new piece of music and have us write it in solfège for all our notes and then he’ll have us stand up and sing it,” said Hong.
“Holiday Lights” will be taking place Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Ticket prices range from $8-$12 and can be inquired about at [email protected] or at (805) 378-1485. Seating is limited.
“‘Holiday Lights’ is as the name indicates,” said Song. “It should put people in that Christmas mood, I think it’s a great concert to start off the holiday season.”
