Finances have always been a concern for students when deciding to go to college. However, many students are uninformed about the many ways they can earn scholarships to help pay for their education.
According to Mikyla Maglente, the scholarship office assistant, the scholarship office gave out around $135,000 in scholarships last year, which the winner doesn’t have to pay back. They are hoping that they will be about to give out a similar amount this year.
“I know last spring had 108 [scholarships] and only about 350 students applied,” Maglente said.
Even though the scholarship office advertises these scholarships with flyers posted around campus and on the marquee at the base of the campus, the pool of students that apply is small.
“Our main issues that we face right now is that students can see our flyers in the hallways and read it but if they don’t realize that they actually have a really significant chance of winning, then they aren’t going to apply,” Maglente said.
She said that sometimes the donors of scholarships only have a three-to-four applicant pool to read over and though it makes it difficult for the donors to pick, the odds are in the applicant’s favor. Unlike some of the commonly known scholarships, the ones listed below are exclusive to Moorpark College students.
“You have a bigger chance of winning a scholarship than you think [and] we are always open to help you,” Maglente said. “All that’s waiting is for you to come in.”
Application deadlines for Moorpark College scholarships have been extended to Feb. 28 by 11:59 p.m. for online applications and due March 1, by 11 a.m. for paper drop-offs. The scholarship office doesn’t take appointments but Maglente encourages students to drop by.
