Oxnard College men’s soccer faced its district rival Moorpark College on Oct. 12, which immediately putting Moorpark’s defense under pressure.
Moorpark had no answer for Oxnard’s aggressive offense in the first half, as Oxnard was able to secure a 5-0 lead. By the time the final whistle blew, Moorpark had been defeated by a score of 7-0.
Oxnard goalie Efrain Perez came through for his team with a clean sheet, making some big plays for his team.
“Our game plan was to just try and find each other open all game,” said Perez. “Every game we always want to try and play in the back, and when we’re on defense I do what I can to keep us in the game.”
Heading into the second half of play, Moorpark looked to make some major improvements from the first half, both on offense and defense. Moorpark managed to make some improvements defensively during this half, but had no luck offensively.
Moorpark sophomore forward Alec Silva tried to make a big impact this game by engaging in aggressive plays throughout the matchup and keeping his team going.
“We were broken down pretty early as a team,” said Silva. “We kinda lost all the momentum, and I think that was the main reason for us losing today. In the future, we need to keep our heads up after we start losing. But, at the end of the day, the team we played was just really good.”
After the game, Moorpark coach Jake Gwin discussed his team’s plan moving forward.
“You can’t get that toothpaste back in the tube,” said Gwin. “What’s done is done; you gotta let it go, move on and learn from it. For us, it’s always about response. This year we’ve had an interesting rhythm where we win one then lose one, so on and so forth. I think if as a team we can find a more consistent rhythm and game plan, we’ll be better off moving forward.”
