Moorpark College recently hosted its annual Transfer Social event, an exciting celebration honoring students transitioning to four-year institutions.

On Thursday, May 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the campus quad and Raider Walk buzzed with excitement as students talked with university admissions representatives from CSU’s, UC’s, private and out-of-state colleges and universities.

Among the highlights of the event were the opportunities for students to connect with admissions reps, indulge in free ice cream and capture memories at the photo booth and selfie station.

Additionally, attendees were encouraged to express gratitude by writing thank-you cards to those who aided them on their transfer journey.

DeAnna Grove, a counseling services specialist at Moorpark College’s University Transfer Center, highlighted the meticulous planning that goes into organizing such an event.

“We start about three months before, coordinating logistics and promoting the event campus-wide. Our aim is to provide students with the resources and support they need as they embark on their transfer journey,” Grove explained.

Beyond the celebratory aspects, the Transfer Social offered valuable resources for students planning their future academic endeavors.

Representatives from 23 universities, including CSUs, UCs, private institutions and even out-of-state schools, were present to answer questions and provide detailed information about their respective programs. This one-stop shop proved to be a valuable asset for students as they navigate their transfer options.

The Transfer Social wasn’t solely focused on graduating transfers. Informative workshops were available for students considering transferring in the future.

Counselor Kelly Porto-Garcia led a “Transfer 101” session, equipping students with the knowledge and tools necessary to successfully navigate the transfer process.

Transitioning from community college to a four-year institution can be a daunting journey, but with the right guidance and support, students can thrive. Trisha Gonzales, assistant director in the Undergraduate Education Office at UCLA, understands this journey firsthand.

“From someone who was a first-generation student, I understand the challenges students face in navigating the college system. My goal is to ensure every student feels supported and empowered to reach their academic goals,” Gonzales said.

Students like Leslie Pacheco expressed appreciation for the opportunity to interact directly with school representatives. For Pacheco, the event provided valuable information that helped solidify her decision about which school to attend.

“I think they’re really good. I think you get a lot of information and it just cements what school you want to go to,” Pacheco explained.

Emma Poff, a future UCLA Bruin, echoed similar sentiments to Pacheco.

“I think last year it had definitely helped me decide where I wanted to go and that’s mainly why I wanted to transfer to UCLA after that last event. Plus, they had giveaways, which was an added bonus,” Poff said.

The Transfer Social highlighted the importance of finding a suitable academic environment. Poff offered valuable advice to incoming transfers.

“Research the university culture and see where you think you’d feel most comfortable. It’s all about finding your academic and social community,” Poff added.

Bryan Gittins, an outreach counselor at CSUN, leverages his own undergraduate experience at the university to guide students through the transfer process. His journey from student assistant to counselor has equipped him with valuable insights into the intricacies of transferring to a four-year institution.

“Helping students with their applications and then seeing them get accepted to their dream school, that’s the most fulfilling part of my job,” Gittins reflects.

To incoming transfer students, Gittins offers a reassuring message.

“Embrace the journey, focus on academics and trust that you will find your place at the right institution,” Gittins encourages.

The Moorpark College Transfer Social was a resounding success. The event provided a welcoming and informative environment for students to celebrate their achievements and prepare for their exciting futures at their chosen universities.
