If poetry is something that tickles your fancy, Oxnard College has a club that will definitely get you giggling. The Poetry Club, a diverse group of poetry fans and writers alike, come together every Wednesday at 3:00 in the Social Science Building, Room 4, to share a common love for the written rhyme.
Harold Sanders, a club member, says the goal of the group is to “show the creativeness of students at Oxnard and bring awareness and interest to poetry.” At a meeting, members can present their own work (or even bring work by others that has served as an inspiration) and present it to the club. Members might then dissect the poem and offer a critique or ask questions about the work and the inspiration or meaning behind it.
By dissecting the poem, the member will have better understanding of their own works and how to better them if they are a writer or how to get more of out of the poem through reading if they are a fan. Sanders spoke about the diversity of the group and how each member brings their own view into the meetings and works. Antonio, a psychology major, sees the club through psych-tinted glasses. Chemistry Professor Jan Straka finds her creative juices in the club and finds her love of languages fueling her poetry.
Sanders mentions that there are members who wouldn’t even consider themselves “writers,” just people who are interested in poetry and they have no problem fitting in with the club. “Everyone’s welcome” says Sanders.
