Student and local artists are encouraged to donate their work to Oxnard College for a chance to have it displayed throughout the school, and at new performing arts building scheduled to open in 2011.
Gwendolyn Lewis Huddleston, Dean of Liberal Studies, is chair of the Oxnard College Outdoor Arts committee.
“Being an artist the President thought it an appropriate assignment for me to take charge of,” said Huddleston. Several art murals were displayed earlier this year, replacing the old lockers. The project does not stop there, however; the group is committed to filling the campus with the art of students and local artists.
The new performing arts building is one of several new projects Oxnard College is taking on in an effort to update the school. Although still in the beginning stages of development, Oxnard College is looking for local artists to submit their work for a chance to have it displayed when the building opens.
“It will open up opportunities for artists to show their work on a college campus,” Huddleston said.
The decision was made about a year ago to have the exhibition open to community artists. Presented by the Oxnard College Outdoor Arts committee, the exhibition is to be displayed throughout the campus in major pedestrian walkways, garden seating areas, and, eventually, the new performing arts building.
As an artist, Huddleston is excited to give other artists the opportunity to display their work on campus. The committee is dedicated to making art a part of Oxnard College. When asked how long she had been an artist her response was, “I’ve been an artist all my life”.
