ASMC approves new Social Media Society Club during board meeting

The Associated Students of Moorpark College board of directors held a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.

One of the items discussed during the meeting was the proposal of a new campus club, the Social Media Society Club. Two members from the club explained additional details regarding their constitution and future plans.

The co-president of the Social Media Society Club, Ashwin Naresh shared the club’s mission.

“Our goal is to bring up issues that our society is facing today because of the transformation of social media,” Naresh said.

The club’s focus will include the positive and negative impacts of social media and how social media can be applied to fields like politics, business and psychology.

The co-presidents also mentioned that they would add workshops for students on how to use certain apps in various ways regarding business or politics.

“We’ll be educating people on how to use different apps on social media, and also we’ll have a resume building workshop, a cover letter writing workshop, so how to build your business profile, or your personal profile, and also how to create a LinkedIn profile, and how to use your LinkedIn profile to apply for jobs, reach out to people, create connections,” Naresh stated.

Co-president of the Social Media Society Club Sophie Sprague, shared a potential presentation topic in regards to the psychological impacts social media can have on students. Following the presentation, members of the club would partake in a discussion in reference to the topic presented.

After additional comments, the club was approved but the co-presidents would need to update their constitution and state their goals more clearly.

The ASMC board members also announced the date and time for the Spring 2020 RAIDERx event which is the Moorpark College equivalent of TEDx where students are able to give presentations. Auditions for RAIDERx will be held on Feb. 24 and the event will take place on Thursday, March 26, from 6-10 p.m.

ASMC Board Meetings are held weekly on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in the ASMC Conference Room located in the Students Activities Office.
